📱 Finland Restricts Mobile Phone Use in Schools:
On April 29, 2025, the Finnish Parliament approved legislation restricting the use of mobile phones and other devices during school hours, effective from August 1. The law allows device use only with teacher approval for educational or health-related reasons and enables teachers or principals to confiscate devices if they disrupt learning. Schools must also establish clear rules on mobile device use during lessons, meals, and breaks. The initiative aims to enhance student well-being and learning by reducing distractions and promoting in-person interactions.
Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz emphasized that the law is not an outright ban but a measure to foster a more focused learning environment. He stated, “Through this law, we give students better opportunities to concentrate on their studies and teachers the tools they need to create a calm working environment that supports learning.”
The Finnish Department of Education and Culture has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive study on the impact of these restrictions, with results expected by the end of 2026. This study will inform any future policy adjustments.
This move aligns Finland with other European nations—such as Denmark, France, and Norway—that have implemented similar restrictions in response to concerns about digital media’s effects on youth, including reduced attention spans and social development.
