A 1978 newspaper article has resurfaced online. It reportedly confirms the name President Bola Ahmed Tinubu used during his studies at Chicago State University (CSU).

The story first appeared in The Sacramento Union on Sunday, June 18, 1978. Nigerian journalist Tolu Ogunlesi recently shared it on X (formerly Twitter). He posted an image of the article and stressed its historical value.
“See what I came across, in The Sacramento Union newspaper of Sunday, June 18, 1978. The story’s about 12 black students from Chicago State University being introduced to the historically all-white racing business—a milestone in 1970s America.”
Tinubu Featured Among 12 Black Students
The article, written by Sharon Kornegay for the Chicago Sun-Times, highlighted a unique diversity program. Twelve black CSU students attended a 30-hour training program at Maywood Park Racetrack in Illinois.
The Associates Racing Association (ARA), a black-owned group, sponsored the project. Its goal was to introduce minority students to the business and management side of horse racing.
“Racing is a lucrative business, but it’s been a closed club that only lets certain people in,” explained John Swain, an ARA partner. He added that the seminar aimed to open new doors for black students.

Tinubu’s Early Economic Views
Among the quoted participants was Bola Tinubu, identified as a Nigerian student at CSU. His comments revealed strong interest in Nigeria’s economic growth.
“Bola Tinubu, a student [of Chicago State University] from Nigeria, said he expects to take his findings back to African businessmen as a plan for his country to make more money and create jobs for the unemployed.”
This rediscovered quote has drawn attention. It provides evidence of Tinubu’s CSU background and shows his early focus on job creation and economic reform.
Historical Context
The initiative also marked a milestone for diversity in American horse racing. Another participant, Larry Brown, expressed optimism about the program.
“Because of the shortage of minorities and our orientation to the racing business, we have the chance to be the first set of black businessmen in the field.”
ARA provided stipends to the students. As a result, many expressed enthusiasm about joining the racing industry after graduation.
Why It Matters Today
This 1978 newspaper clipping offers rare insight into Tinubu’s formative years in the United States. It not only confirms his CSU enrollment but also reflects his early ambition for Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Therefore, the resurfaced article continues to fuel discussions about his educational background and the roots of his political and economic vision.
