2026 UTME/DE Registration: Important Steps to Take Before JAMB Registration Begins

The 2026 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) registration is expected to begin this January. As preparations continue, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released early guidelines to help candidates get ready.

While the process will largely follow last year’s format, there is one key update. Candidates must now declare their current admission status, stating whether they are already enrolled in a tertiary institution.

To help you prepare properly, here are important steps you should take before registration starts.

1. Get Your National Identification Number (NIN)

First and foremost, NIN remains mandatory for all UTME and DE candidates. If you do not have one yet, visit any approved NIMC enrolment centre as soon as possible.

Since registration cannot proceed without NIN, early action will save you unnecessary stress later.

2. Use a Personal Phone Number for Profile Code Creation

Next, you will need a personal and active phone number to generate your JAMB profile code. You will send your NIN to the shortcode provided by JAMB.

Importantly, JAMB will send all future updates and alerts to this number. Therefore, avoid using someone else’s line or a number you may lose access to.

3. Create a Functional Email Address

In addition, JAMB requires every candidate to provide an email address during registration. Your email also serves as a backup if you lose access to your phone number.

If you do not have one yet, you can easily create a free Gmail account at gmail.com.

4. Decide on the Course You Want to Study

Now is the best time to carefully choose your course. Do not wait until registration starts.

Select a course you are passionate about and academically prepared for. Also, keep a second-choice course in mind, as JAMB requires this during registration.

5. Choose Your Preferred Institution Early

Similarly, decide on the school you want to apply to before registration opens. Consider factors such as course availability, admission requirements, school fees, and location.

For better chances, it is wise to keep a backup option, such as a polytechnic or college of education.

6. Confirm Your Subject Combination

Every course has a specific subject combination. Choosing the wrong subjects can ruin your admission chances, even with a high score.

Therefore, always confirm the correct subjects using the JAMB Brochure before registration.

7. Ask for Help When You’re Unsure

If you feel confused about your course, institution, or subject combination, seek guidance early.

You can ask questions on trusted education platforms, use student support apps, or join verified JAMB 2026 WhatsApp groups for real-time advice.

8. Understand the Registration Process

The JAMB registration process follows three clear steps:

Profile Code Generation → E-PIN Purchase → Registration at an Approved CBT Centre

Knowing this flow in advance helps you avoid mistakes.

Important Tips to Note

  • Correct any errors in your NIN details early at NIMC and confirm the updates.
  • Use a unique phone number and email. Do not share or reuse them.
  • If biometric capture fails, visit a JAMB office immediately.
  • Ensure the CBT centre uses dual screens so you can confirm your data in real time.
  • Finally, cross-check every detail before submission.

By taking these steps early, you will avoid last-minute issues and enjoy a smooth 2026 JAMB registration process. Preparation truly makes the difference.
