A day of pride and excitement at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, ended in bloodshed after a violent cult clash broke out during a signing-out ceremony in Etsako West. What began as a joyful event for final-year students quickly turned into panic, leaving at least one person confirmed dead and another feared killed.

How the Violence Started
According to eyewitnesses, students had gathered to celebrate the completion of their final exams. The mood was festive, with music, dancing, and signing-out rituals. But the celebration took a dark turn when a stray bullet struck a Mercedes Benz believed to belong to a suspected cult member.
The incident immediately escalated tensions. Rival cult groups — the Eiye Confraternity and the Black Axe (popularly called Aye) — reportedly confronted each other near a hotel close to the polytechnic. Gunshots rang out, forcing students and residents to scatter for safety.
Some students ran into nearby houses, while others hid in shops. In the chaos, one student was fatally shot, and another was run over by a speeding vehicle attempting to flee the scene.
Police Confirmations and Contradictions
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Moses Yamu, who said one death had been officially recorded. However, several eyewitnesses insisted that two people died, including a student caught in the crossfire.
The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has opened an investigation to track down those responsible for the violence. Police patrols have also been increased around the area to prevent further clashes.

Growing Fear and Public Reactions
News of the killings spread quickly across Auchi and surrounding communities, sparking outrage and fear among students and locals. Many expressed anger on social media, calling for urgent action against cultism in higher institutions.
Parents of students at Auchi Polytechnic voiced concern for their children’s safety, demanding stronger campus security. Community leaders have also appealed to the government and law enforcement agencies to tackle cult-related violence, which has plagued Edo State for years.
Calls for Stronger Security Measures
Students’ unions and civil groups are now pushing for:
- Regular police presence around campuses.
- Tougher penalties for cult-related crimes.
- Peace-building initiatives to reduce violent rivalries.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers of cult activities in Nigerian tertiary institutions. For many, what should have been a day of celebration turned into a chilling reminder of how insecurity continues to threaten lives and futures.
