Police Yet to Comment

As at the time of publishing, the Kebbi State Police Command had not released any statement regarding the incident. Calls made to the state police spokesperson, Nafiu Abubakar, went unanswered. This silence has heightened tension in the area, as residents expect security updates and immediate protection.

A Growing Pattern of School Attacks

Over the years, armed gangs—commonly known as bandits—have grown more violent across the northwestern and central regions of Nigeria. They frequently raid villages, steal livestock, and kidnap residents for ransom. Sadly, they have increasingly turned schools into targets.

These incidents differ from the insurgency in the northeast. However, they mirror the painful history of Boko Haram’s 2014 abduction of more than 270 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State. Many communities now worry about the safety of their children, especially in remote villages where security presence is thin.

Broader Security Concerns for Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security forces continue to battle multiple threats, including terrorism in the northeast and separatist tensions in the south. However, the rising wave of mass abductions in the northwest remains one of the most urgent challenges.

In a related security update, AbdulRahman Usman-Zagga, the State Director of Security, Cabinet Office, confirmed the killing of a local guardian, Maigemu, during another fierce gun battle in Kuncin Baba, Arewa Local Government Area. The difficult terrain of the region has made security response even more challenging.

Community in Mourning

The people of Maga now grieve the loss of a dedicated educator who died defending his students. Families remain anxious as they wait for information about the abducted girls. The community has called on federal and state authorities to act swiftly and prevent further tragedies.
