Section A: Grammar and Structure
Question 1: She has been absent ____ Monday.
Options:

Correct Answer: Since
Explanation: Use “since” when referring to a specific point in time.
E.g., She has been working since she was three years old.
Question 2: I don’t know where she ____ gone.
Options:
A) Had
B) Have
C) Has
D) Is
Correct Answer: Has
Explanation: Present perfect tense is required here – “has gone” is the proper form because she has not yet returned.
Question 3: If he ____ earlier, he would have met me.
Options:
A) Came
B) Comes
C) Had come
D) Has come
Correct Answer: Had come
Explanation: This is a third conditional sentence (past unreal). It requires “had” to match with “would have.”
Question 4: Neither the boy nor his friends ____ at home.
Options:

Explanation: The verb agrees with the noun closest to it. “Friends” is plural, so use “were.”

Section B: Vocabulary – Synonyms and Antonyms
Here, we explore the meaning and opposite of words as used in common BECE questions.
- “Abandon” — synonym: Leave, antonym: Retain
- “Generous” — synonym: Kind, antonym: Stingy
- “Transparent” — synonym: Clear, antonym: Opaque
Understanding vocabulary is crucial for comprehension and expression. Always look for context clues within the sentence.
Section C: Comprehension Passage (Sample 36–45)
A passage is usually given in your exam followed by questions. Tips:
- Read the passage twice before answering.
- Underline keywords in the passage.
- Watch for inference questions — not everything is directly stated!
Example:
The boy ran as fast as he could because he was afraid.
Q: Why did the boy run?
A: Because he was afraid.
