The Benue State Police Command has clarified details of the tragic incident in Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area, that claimed the life of one student and left two others injured.

How the Clash Escalated
According to Police Public Relations Officer, SP Udeme Edet, the students were never the intended targets of the military personnel. Trouble began when soldiers on routine patrol sighted armed men riding a motorcycle. Immediately, the troops pursued the suspects. However, the armed men opened fire, which forced the soldiers to respond in self-defense.
Unfortunately, stray bullets from the exchange struck three students who were nearby.

Casualties and Quick Medical Response
Witnesses rushed the victims to a nearby hospital. Sadly, one student died shortly after arrival. On the other hand, the two survivors sustained injuries but remain in stable condition and continue to receive treatment.

To address the tragedy, the police have opened a full investigation. SP Edet emphasized that security agencies will work to ensure accountability. Moreover, authorities have promised to adopt stronger safety measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
