Introduction

Good morning, students!
My name is Francis, and in today’s biology class, we will be exploring the transport system in living organisms. This is a foundational topic in biology that explains how essential substances are moved throughout the body.

Let’s get started with the questions and answers.

Objectives of the Lesson

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  1. Define the transport system in living organisms.
  2. Mention the importance of transportation in living organisms.
  3. Identify the materials and media of transportation in living systems.
  4. Describe blood and blood vessels as components of the transport system.
  5. Explain the circulatory system and its role in transporting substances.

What is the Transport System?

The transport system refers to the movement of materials from one part of a living organism to another. In animals, it involves transporting metabolic substances like food, water, and oxygen to the cells where they are needed and removing waste products.

Transport System in Animals

In animals, transportation includes:

  • Movement of nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, and fats from the digestive system to body cells.
  • Movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between respiratory organs and tissues.
  • Distribution of water and hormones throughout the body.

This process is made possible by two main systems:

  1. Circulatory System – Responsible for transporting nutrients, gases, and wastes through the blood.
  2. Respiratory System – Facilitates gas exchange, mainly oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Components of the Transport System

Blood

Blood is the fluid medium responsible for transporting nutrients, gases, and wastes in animals. It contains:

  • Red blood cells (erythrocytes): Carry oxygen
  • White blood cells (leukocytes): Fight infections
  • Platelets (thrombocytes): Aid in clotting
  • Plasma: Transports dissolved substances

Blood Vessels

Blood is transported through specialized tubes called blood vessels. These include:

  • Arteries: Carry blood away from the heart
  • Veins: Return blood to the heart
  • Capillaries: Connect arteries and veins, allowing exchange of substances with cells

Importance of the Transport System

  • Supplies cells with nutrients and oxygen
  • Removes waste products like carbon dioxide and urea
  • Distributes hormones and maintains homeostasis
  • Helps in defense against diseases through white blood cells
  • Regulates temperature in warm-blooded animals

Conclusion

The transport system is crucial for sustaining life, ensuring that every cell receives nutrients and oxygen while removing wastes. Understanding this system provides a strong foundation for studying human physiology and plant transport systems in later classes.
