A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of eight students from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) along Zaria Road in Jos, Plateau State. The heartbreaking incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when a bus carrying the students collided with a trailer near Unity Bank.

How the Accident Happened
According to eyewitnesses, eleven students were inside the bus at the time of the crash. Seven students died instantly, while an eighth victim passed away later in the hospital. The remaining three survivors are receiving medical treatment for varying degrees of injuries.
Witnesses also reported that the bus was speeding and attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre shortly before the collision. This risky move likely caused the driver to lose control, leading to the fatal impact.

FRSC Confirms the Incident
Peter Longsan, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, confirmed the accident. He explained that the agency received a distress call around 2:30 a.m. and immediately dispatched rescue teams to the scene.
Longsan also noted that all the victims were male students of the University of Jos. The FRSC has begun an investigation into the cause of the crash while urging motorists to observe speed limits, especially at night.

The UNIJOS community is reeling from the loss. The tragedy has sparked grief and shock among students, staff, families, and residents of Plateau State. Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and call for initiatives to improve road safety in the region.
