Sandra Onah, a strong Nigerian mother, has managed to get a Master of Science degree in Accounting and Finance from Ithaca University in New York, USA. Despite the tremendous obstacles of parenthood, marriage, cultural adjustment, and personal loss.
Sandra revealed on LinkedIn how difficult her academic path was. She had to adjust to a new educational system, get over linguistic and cultural obstacles, and initially survive without childcare as an international student, depending on friends until she could afford part-time assistance.
Throughout her time at university, Sandra balanced multiple demanding roles—student, employee, wife, and most importantly, mother. She gave her husband credit for supporting her during her emotional lows and restless nights while he went on to complete his own graduate work. When she felt overwhelmed, she was kept going by her daughter Kamsi’s grin and a professor’s reassurance that “your child is watching and learning from you.”
Due to the recent loss of her father, Sandra also had to deal with the emotional burden of mourning. She said that the strength to keep going came from his remembrance.
She stressed the following in her address to other women, particularly moms and overseas students:
“No challenge is too large, and no dream is too big. Never lose faith in yourself, embrace your path, and have faith in your network of support.
Sandra is now excited about the future and motivated to keep creating a life full of opportunities and meaning.
