According to Arigbabu, the protest erupted because the junior school principal had allegedly been collecting illegal fees from students. When security personnel were called in to control the unrest, the situation quickly escalated.
“We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our condolences to the family of the deceased. Our hearts are with them,” Arigbabu stated.
Key Findings from the Investigation
- Identity Discrepancies
The deceased student was reportedly known by three different names: Babalola Ayomide, Salako Jimoh, and Afolabi Babalola. However, none of these names appeared in the official OGSERA (Ogun State Education Registration Application) database, raising suspicions of illegal enrollment. - Unauthorized Fee Collection
Investigators confirmed that the junior school principal had been charging students unapproved fees. This malpractice triggered the protest that spiraled out of control.
Government’s Response
To address the crisis, the Ogun State Government has:
- Placed both principals on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of a full investigation.
- Introduced a Whistleblower Scheme through the Teaching Service Commission to encourage students, staff, and parents to report misconduct within schools.
- Reaffirmed its commitment to providing free, equitable education to all children, regardless of gender, religion, social background, or location.
Moving Forward
The government assured the public that it would uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident. It also promised to hold accountable any individuals found guilty of compromising students’ welfare and safety.
