The football community in South America is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 16-year-old Miguel Nazareno, a rising football star who died after being struck by a stray bullet at his family home in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Wednesday, November 5.

Nazareno, who played as a forward and midfielder, was a member of Independiente Juniors, the youth academy of Independiente del Valle — one of Ecuador’s top football clubs.
Club Confirms His Passing
Independiente Juniors announced his death in an emotional statement shared on Instagram. The club expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with his family.
The message read:
“The Independiente del Valle family expresses its deep sorrow for the passing of Miguel Nazareno, player of our youth system. He was at home when he tragically became a victim of the insecurity that continues to affect our country.”
The tribute included black-and-white photos of Nazareno on the pitch, a reminder of his promise and passion for the game.
Growing Concern Over Violence
Sadly, Nazareno’s death is not an isolated case. Rising gun violence in Ecuador has claimed the lives of several young athletes. In just the past few months, Maicol Valencia, Leandro Yepez, and Jonathan Gonzalez also lost their lives to shootings.
Nazareno’s death marks the fourth footballer killed by bullets this year.
Ecuadorian police have opened investigations, although they have not yet released official details on the circumstances of the shooting.
