Introduction
Hello viewers!
My name is Adebanke, and welcome to today’s class on Genetics and Heredity. In this lesson, we will explore fundamental concepts such as DNA structure, Mendelian inheritance, genes, chromosomes, and genetic disorders. These topics are core areas in biology and frequently appear in exams like WAEC, NECO, JAMB, and international assessments.
Let’s get started with the questions and answers.
What is Genetics?
When you think of genetics, you probably think of DNA and specific traits that appear in families. Some families have members who are mostly tall, while others might have shorter members. Genetics is the study of how traits are inherited from one generation to the next.
What is Heredity?
Heredity refers to the passing of traits from parents to offspring through genetic material (DNA). For example, if a parent has full hair, that trait can also appear in their children. These inherited traits explain similarities between family members.
DNA: The Blueprint of Life
There is no way to discuss genetics without mentioning DNA — Deoxyribonucleic Acid.
Meaning of DNA
- Deoxy: Without oxygen
- Ribo: Ribose, a five-carbon sugar
- Nucleic: Found in the cell’s nucleus
- Acid: Acidic nature due to the presence of phosphate groups
Structure of DNA
DNA has a unique structure often compared to a twisted ladder (double helix). The long strands form the sides of the ladder, while paired bases form the rungs. These base pairs include:
- Adenine (A) with Thymine (T)
- Cytosine (C) with Guanine (G)
The structure is made up of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA.
Importance of Genetics
- Explains why traits are passed from parents to children
- Helps in understanding genetic disorders and inheritance patterns
- Essential for studies in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology
- Forms the basis for modern genetics and molecular biology research

Conclusion
Genetics and heredity form the foundation of modern biology, explaining how traits are passed across generations. By mastering DNA structure and Mendelian inheritance, students can better understand human traits, genetic disorders, and variations in living organisms.
