The Plateau State Police Command has arrested Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level Agriculture student at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), for allegedly killing his close friend, Peter Mafuyai, a 300-level Banking and Finance student at the same institution.

The shocking incident happened on Saturday, October 25, at Timnan’s off-campus residence in the Laranto area of Jos.
How the Incident Unfolded
Eyewitnesses said the two students were best friends who shared a strong interest in music. On the day of the incident, they first played football together before heading to a studio for a recording session.
Afterward, they returned to Timnan’s apartment. According to a witness, Timnan suddenly picked up a machete. When asked why, he reportedly replied that it was “for something.” Moments later, he struck Peter with the weapon.
“Everyone started screaming and asking why, but he didn’t respond,” the eyewitness recounted. “Some people ran to call for help, but by the time they came back, he had already buried the body in a shallow grave behind the house.”

Police Response and Investigation
Police officers from the Laranto Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call around 9:30 a.m. They immediately arrested Timnan.
A police source said the motive remains unclear, though investigators suspect the killing may be linked to a disagreement over their music project. The victim’s body has since been exhumed and deposited at Bingham University Teaching Hospital for autopsy. Investigations are ongoing.
University and Student Union Reactions
When contacted, the university’s Acting Head of Information, Tongdyen Dachung, declined to comment, stating he needed to verify details before making an official statement.
Meanwhile, the Student Union Government (SUG) President, Jane Pwajok, confirmed the union is following the case closely. She emphasized that the matter is firmly in the hands of the police.
As of press time, attempts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages went unanswered.
