The Federal Government, through the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has officially declared 16 years as the minimum age for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions starting from the 2025/2026 academic session, reversing the previously floated 18-year proposal
The age limit is strictly non-negotiable. Institutions found admitting younger students or falsifying records will face legal sanctions, including possible withdrawal of licenses and prosecution
.
The decision is said to balance cognitive maturity and academic readiness, ensuring that students entering tertiary education are developmentally prepared
The government reiterated that any admission conducted outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) is illegal, and both institutions and individuals responsible will be held accountable
Why This Matters:
Standardizes entry age across all tertiary institutions.
Protects younger applicants from premature exposure to university environments.
Enhances transparency and deters fraud in the admission process.
