Woman Loses ₦1.5 Million in Fake LASCOHET Admission Scam

A shocking case of admission fraud has emerged in Lagos after a woman reportedly lost ₦1.5 million to a cybercafé operator who falsely promised her admission into the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET).

How the Scam Happened

According to a statement by the Lagos State Government on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the victim first paid ₦500,000 to the suspect, identified as Mr. Arapatile, who claimed he could facilitate her admission. He later demanded more money, and she eventually paid a total of ₦1.5 million.

When the admission failed to materialize, Arapatile allegedly told her to start attending classes and assured her she would eventually receive a certificate. However, when she demanded a refund, he threatened to silence her. This prompted the woman to report the matter to the school authorities.

Investigation and Arrest

During interrogation, Arapatile admitted to the allegations but claimed the admission was not for LASCOHET. Instead, he said it was for a professional body he called “CIMB”, though he could not explain what the acronym meant.

Authorities also recovered several institutional stamp pads from his shop, raising suspicions of wider fraudulent activities. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

LASCOHET Reacts

The Provost of LASCOHET, Professor Raheem Akewushola, distanced the institution from the fraud. He emphasized that Arapatile has no ties to the college—neither as a staff member nor as an authorized agent.

“LASCOHET has zero tolerance for admission fraud. We will ensure that the perpetrator faces legal action,” Professor Akewushola stated.

Crackdown on Admission Fraud in Nigeria

This case is not isolated. In a related development, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), confirmed a similar scam. She revealed that a staff member allegedly collected ₦400,000 from a parent with the false promise of securing admission into the medical faculty. The university has already begun disciplinary action against the offender.

Key Takeaway

These cases highlight the growing trend of admission fraud in Nigeria. Students and parents are strongly advised to avoid unauthorized agents and conduct all admission processes only through official university portals and JAMB CAPS.
