Maureen Okam-Achebe daughter of the late famous Nigerian author Chinua Achebe, has received a distinguished faculty award from Harvard Medical School. In Massachusetts, USA, she received the Brigham and Women’s Hospital 2024 Faculty Development and Diversity Award.
Her brother posted a notice stating that the prize honours exceptional work in academic areas such clinical care, research, teaching, and community involvement. The honour validates Maureen’s important contribution to the advancement of diversity and quality in medicine.
Maureen started her schooling in Nigeria, where she graduated from the University of Port Harcourt with a medical degree. After receiving training at Yale School of Medicine in hematology and medical oncology, she went on to Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health to get a master’s degree in public health.
She is presently an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, the Director of Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Non-Malignant Haematology Clinic and Outpatient Infusion Centre, and the Director of the hospital’s Sickle Cell Program. Her accomplishments demonstrate a lifetime dedication to healthcare, education, and the advancement of Marginalised populations.
