Students and alumni oppose Ibadan Poly renaming.

On Friday, students and alumni organizations at The Polytechnic in Ibadan, Oyo State, opposed the state governor Seyi Makinde’s proposal to rename the school in honor of the late former governor Omololu Olunloyo.

According to PUNCH Online, Makinde stated on Thursday that the school will be renamed in honor of the late Olunloyo, the university’s first rector.

Oladipupo Olamide, the president of the Students Union Government, expressed unhappiness with the decision in a statement issued in the state capital of Ibadan.

“The Polytechnic, Ibadan has been a symbol of academic brilliance for more than 50 years, turning forth exceptional graduates who have significantly impacted society. “The Polytechnic, Ibadan” has gained respect and reputation throughout the country and is a byword for high-quality education.

The president of SUG pleaded with the governor to change his mind and let the institution keep its original name, which embodies its purpose, beliefs, and history.
