NYSC Begins Payment of ₦44,000 Arrears to Corps Members Following New ₦77,000 Monthly Allowance Approval

Published on Jun 4, 2025 • Education

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced the payment of arrears to corps members, following the Federal Government’s implementation of a new ₦77,000 monthly allowance. The disbursements, which began in batches, cover the difference between the previous ₦33,000 stipend and the newly approved rate, fulfilling a longstanding government pledge tied to the revised national minimum wage.

This was officially confirmed by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop held in Abuja.

Background: A Long-Awaited Adjustment
The new corps members’ allowance, tied to the ₦70,000 national minimum wage plus a 10% adjustment, was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in July 2024. However, the actual implementation only began in March 2025, leading to months of frustration among serving corps members who continued to receive the former ₦33,000 rate.

The current arrears payments make up the difference for the period between July 2024 and February 2025.

NYSC Leadership Reassures All Beneficiaries
Brig. Gen. Nafiu reassured both serving and recently discharged corps members that they will receive the full arrears owed to them.

“The government is conscious of its promise, and within the budgetary provision, it will handle the arrears. Even those who have recently passed out will benefit—we have their bank details,” he stated.

He emphasized that payments are being processed in phases to ensure accuracy and compliance with budgetary procedures.

Corps Members React to Long-Awaited Relief
For many corps members, the payment of arrears comes as a major relief and a sign of long-awaited recognition.

“This is a game-changer for us,” said Adebola Yusuf, a corps member serving in Osun State. “After months of waiting, seeing the arrears hit my account feels like a burden lifted. It’s not just about the money—it’s about knowing our efforts are valued.”

Isma’il Isah, a 2024 Batch A Stream 2 corps member from Kano, also expressed his thoughts: “We were promised ₦77,000 but kept receiving ₦33,000. It was disheartening. Now that the arrears are coming, it’s a step toward showing the government cares about our welfare.”

Looking Forward
The implementation of the new allowance and arrears payment marks a significant step toward improving youth welfare and restoring confidence in the NYSC scheme. It also signals the Federal Government’s commitment to aligning public service stipends with economic realities and wage reforms.

Corps members and the general public are encouraged to stay informed through official NYSC platforms and approved government communication outlets.
