Published on Mar 18, 2026 • Education

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

The announcement, made on behalf of the government by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, signals the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan. In a statement released by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim faithful across the country.

A Call for Unity and Virtue
Beyond the festivities, the government has urged Nigerians to reflect on the spiritual lessons of the past month. The Minister encouraged Muslims to sustain the core values emphasized during Ramadan, including:

Love and Kindness: Extending a helping hand to those in need.

Peace and Tolerance: Fostering harmony within diverse communities.

Sacrifice: Putting the collective good above personal interests.

Minister Tunji-Ojo also called on all citizens, regardless of faith, to use this period to pray for the continued peace, unity, and national progress of Nigeria.

Celebrating Responsibly
As Nigerians prepare for the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," the Ministry emphasized the importance of a safe and orderly celebration.

Kindness to the Less Privileged: Citizens are encouraged to share the joy of the season by reaching out to the vulnerable in their communities.

National Coexistence: The government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a society where every Nigerian can coexist peacefully.

Whether you are traveling to visit family or celebrating at home, the Federal Government wishes all Nigerians a joyful and secure holiday period.
