Abuja, Nigeria – Music professionals and education advocates are urging the Nigerian government to reintegrate music education into the national school curriculum, citing its critical role in talent discovery, cognitive development, and national unity. The call was made during the 5th edition of the Abuja National Music Competition, held recently in the nation’s capital. The event brought together young performers from across Nigeria’s primary and secondary schools, showcasing exceptional vocal and instrumental talent.
"Government Must Do More" – Nigerian Air Force Music Director
Speaking at the event, Wing Commander Ayodeji Ayanbode, Director of Music, Nigerian Air Force and member of the competition’s judging panel, emphasized the importance of institutional support for music in schools.
“The government needs to do more to promote music in our schools. This responsibility should not be left to private individuals or corporate sponsors alone,” Ayanbode stated.
“Competitions like this reveal the incredible potential hidden within our schoolchildren. Music plays a crucial role in developing not only their creativity but also their discipline and intelligence.”
A Platform to Rediscover Music's Role in Education
The Abuja National Music Competition is an annual event that aims to revive music education and nurture artistic talent among Nigerian youth. With the theme “Take the Stage,” the 2025 edition focused on encouraging healthy competition and creativity among students.
Founder and organiser, Mrs. Nana Gbolahan, a creative business strategist and education advocate, said the competition was born out of concern over the removal of music from many school curriculums.
“We noticed that a lot of schools no longer offer music as a subject. This has discouraged students with an interest or talent in music,” Gbolahan said.
“Our aim is to keep music alive in Nigerian schools. Music enhances intelligence, calms the mind, and serves as a powerful tool for unity across tribes and cultures.”
She added that the absence of Ministry of Education officials at the 2025 edition, despite prior communication, highlights the need for more government engagement in such initiatives.
A Call for Broader Support
Gbolahan also called on corporate organizations and stakeholders to partner with the competition and similar programs to support music education and the discovery of young talents.
“We’re not just promoting music — we’re building confidence, creativity, and future careers. With greater support, we can do even more.”
