Understanding Waves and Properties in Physics

Published on Jul 1, 2025 • Education

Welcome, students!
My name is Cyril, and I’ll be guiding you through today’s exciting Physics topic: Waves and Their Properties. Make sure you have your writing materials and calculators ready—let’s dive right in!

You can watch the full class in the video below:

What is a Wave?

A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. Waves are fundamental concepts in Physics.
But what does this really mean?

It means that waves involve the movement of energy, not the movement of matter. The medium through which the wave travels does not experience any permanent displacement. Instead, energy passes through it.

Classification of Waves

Waves can be classified into various types depending on how they transfer energy and interact with matter. Understanding the different types of waves helps us identify their unique behaviors and applications.

The two main types of waves are:

  • Mechanical Waves
  • Electromagnetic Waves

Mechanical Waves

Mechanical waves require a medium to travel through. Examples include:

  • Sound waves
  • Water waves
  • Seismic waves

These waves cannot travel through a vacuum because they need particles to propagate the energy.

Electromagnetic Waves

Unlike mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves do not need a medium. They can travel through the vacuum of space. Examples include:

  • Light waves
  • Radio waves
  • X-rays
  • Microwaves

This is why sunlight reaches Earth from the Sun, even though space is a vacuum.

Wave Properties You Must Know

Every wave has certain key characteristics:

  • Amplitude – the height of the wave
  • Wavelength – the distance between two consecutive crests or troughs
  • Frequency – how often the wave oscillates in one second
  • Speed – how fast the wave travels through the medium
  • Period – the time it takes to complete one cycle

Understanding these properties helps in calculating wave behavior and interactions.

Conclusion: Why You Should Master Waves in Physics

Waves are everywhere—from the sounds you hear to the light you see and the mobile signals you use daily. Mastering the basics of wave types and their properties gives you a deeper understanding of how the physical world operates.
