WAEC Debunks Rumour of English Language Paper Cancellation in 2025 WASSCE

Published on Jun 4, 2025 • Education

Lagos, Nigeria – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has officially debunked widespread rumours claiming the cancellation of the 2025 English Language paper written as part of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

A fake press release, dated Friday, May 30, 2025, had gone viral on social media, alleging that the May 28 English Language examination had been annulled and that a new date would be communicated to candidates.

In a swift response, WAEC on Tuesday issued a statement disassociating itself from the viral document, describing it as false and the product of “mischief-makers.”

“The management of the West African Examinations Council would like to state that the press release being circulated did not emanate from the council,” the statement read.

The release, signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, reaffirmed that the English Language paper has not been cancelled, and the examination remains valid.

No Cancellation, Just Delays
WAEC attributed the spread of the rumour to operational disruptions on May 28, when the English Language exam began several hours late at multiple centres, with some candidates reportedly writing the paper under torchlight late into the night.

While the council admitted to the unusual delay, it explained that this was due to intensified security measures aimed at preventing examination malpractice, especially the leakage of question papers.

“The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute, and to cause confusion and panic for candidates who sat the examination,” WAEC noted.

Official Channels Only
WAEC used the opportunity to remind the public that all valid information regarding its examinations will only be communicated via verified sources, including its official social media handles and accredited media outlets.

“All pieces of information from the council are disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across the country,” the statement emphasized.

It also reiterated that authentic press releases are only issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.

Appreciation and Assurance
WAEC thanked stakeholders—students, parents, and educators—for their continued trust and cooperation, especially during challenging periods.

“Once again, we thank all stakeholders for the confidence reposed in us over the last 73 years, and we promise to always seek innovative ways to render quality services to the Nigerian child,” the council concluded.

WAEC's response comes amid growing scrutiny over examination management in Nigeria. Investigations by ALLCBTs Online revealed that the English Language paper had been leaked four days before the scheduled exam, with some WAEC officials allegedly linked to the breach.

The council has pledged to work closely with relevant authorities to identify and prosecute any staff found complicit in compromising exam integrity.
