Tragic Incident at GSTC Potiskum Raises Fresh Concerns Over School Safety

Published on Feb 10, 2026 • Education

A tragic incident has shaken Government Science and Technical College, Potiskum, Yobe State, following the death of an SS3 student who was allegedly bullied by fellow students.

According to available information, the incident occurred on Sunday, when some classmates reportedly attacked the student under circumstances that are still unclear. Sadly, the student died from the incident and was laid to rest later the same day in Gadaka, Fika Local Government Area.

Meanwhile, the Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the case. The police spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, stated that the command is aware of the incident and has already begun investigations to establish what truly happened.

In addition, a teacher from the school, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that suspected students involved in the incident have been handed over to the police for further questioning. This step, according to the source, aims to ensure accountability and transparency in the investigation.

Furthermore, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Abba Idriss Adam, acknowledged awareness of the incident and indicated that an official statement would be issued. However, as of the time of this report, no further response has been received.

Importantly, this unfortunate event has renewed serious concerns about student safety and bullying in schools. Bullying, when ignored or poorly managed, can lead to severe and irreversible consequences. Therefore, parents, school authorities, and education stakeholders must work together to identify early warning signs and protect students.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to act decisively. Ultimately, many believe that clear disciplinary measures, stronger supervision, and sustained awareness campaigns are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This tragic loss serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need to create safer school environments where every student feels protected and supported.
