Welcome to Class

Hello students! Welcome to today’s class.
My name is David, and I’ll be taking you through an engaging session on Biology. Our topic is Biology and Living Things — an essential foundation for understanding life sciences.

Objectives of This Lesson

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  1. Define Biology
  2. State briefly what Biology is about
  3. Mention the branches of Biology
  4. Define Science and its relevance to life and the environment
  5. List and explain the methods of science

What is Biology?

Biology can be broken into two Greek words:

  • Bios – meaning “Life”
  • Logos – meaning “Study”

When combined, Biology means the study of life. This includes the study of living organisms such as plants and animals, focusing on their structure, function, growth, and interactions with the environment.

Characteristics of Living Things

Living things possess unique features that distinguish them from non-living things, such as:

  • Movement
  • Respiration
  • Nutrition
  • Growth
  • Reproduction
  • Response to stimuli
  • Excretion
  • Adaptation

Understanding these characteristics helps us identify what qualifies as a living organism.

Branches of Biology

Biology has several branches, each focusing on specific aspects of life. Some include:

  • Zoology – Study of animals
  • Botany – Study of plants
  • Microbiology – Study of microorganisms
  • Genetics – Study of heredity and variation
  • Ecology – Study of interactions between organisms and their environment

What is Science?

Science is the systematic study of nature and its phenomena. It provides explanations and predictions about the natural world using observations, experiments, and reasoning. Science is vital for improving human life and understanding the environment around us.

Methods of Science

The methods of science involve a series of steps used by scientists to investigate and solve problems:

  1. Observation – Carefully watching phenomena or events
  2. Hypothesis Formation – Making predictions based on observations
  3. Experimentation – Testing hypotheses using controlled methods
  4. Data Collection and Analysis – Recording and interpreting results
  5. Conclusion – Drawing logical inferences
  6. Theory or Law Formation – Establishing general principles based on repeated testing

Conclusion

Biology is the study of life, encompassing all living organisms and their interactions with the environment. By understanding its branches, characteristics of living things, and the scientific method, students gain a solid foundation for future studies in science and related fields.
