HND II Student’s Viral Video Sparks Debate on Rising Education Costs

HND II Student’s Viral Video Sparks Debate on Rising Education Costs

Published on Feb 13, 2026 • Education

A Higher National Diploma (HND II) student has stirred conversations online after expressing frustration over the financial demands of her education. In a video that quickly went viral, the student described the cost of schooling as overwhelming.

According to her, she has spent about ₦7.8 million since beginning her programme. She lamented the constant payments and unexpected expenses, saying the financial pressure has been intense. In her words, “Everywhere bill, bill, bill. The ₦7.8 million I brought to this school has finished because of payment after payment.”

“If I Knew, I Would Have Married Earlier”

During the video, the student made a statement that drew mixed reactions. She said that if she had known how financially demanding the HND programme would be, she might have chosen marriage before pursuing her studies.

She also revealed her post-graduation plan, explaining that she intends to move directly to her husband’s house after completing her programme to avoid paying rent. That remark, in particular, generated strong opinions across social media platforms.

Mixed Reactions Online

While many viewers sympathized with her situation, others questioned the idea of placing marriage above education. Some argued that rising education costs in Nigeria are becoming unsustainable, especially for students in technical and professional programmes.

On the other hand, several commentators suggested that government intervention, improved student loan systems, and more accessible scholarships could help ease the burden.

A Broader Issue

Beyond the viral moment, her story reflects a deeper concern. Many Nigerian students struggle to balance tuition fees, accommodation, feeding, materials, and other hidden costs. For some, these pressures affect not just their academic performance but also their personal life decisions.

Consequently, her candid remarks have reignited discussions about affordable education, financial support systems, and the long-term sustainability of tertiary education funding.

Final Thoughts

Whether one agrees with her perspective or not, the video has opened an important conversation. Rising education costs remain a real challenge for many students. As debates continue online, one thing is clear: more attention is needed to ensure that higher education remains accessible and sustainable for all.
