FG Assures Nigerian Students No University Strike
Published on Sep 1, 2025 • Education
The Federal Government has assured Nigerian students that there won't be another round of university strike as a result of the Academic Staff Union of Universities' (ASUU) current protests.
The pledge came after a high-level meeting with senior government officials in Abuja to discuss ASUU's complaints, which was led by Minister of State for Education Tunji Alausa.
This administration opposes strikes. "We are committed to keeping our children in school because President Bola Ahmed Tinubu firmly believes that they are the lifeblood of this country," Alausa said.

He said that in order to shield public universities from frequent university strike, President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Education to engage with pertinent agencies to create a long-lasting and legally solid framework.
Instead of committing to "unsustainable agreements," Alausa stressed, the administration would prioritise workable and feasible solutions. He reassured the Nigerian people that the current process is being managed with honesty, responsibility, and care.

The breakthrough in adding earned academic allowances to the pay structure was one of the advancements that the minister emphasised.
Furthermore, he affirmed that once comparable payments to other public sector employees start, the remaining 35% wage arrears owed to academics will be settled.
In order to support continued discussions, a technical group has been formed to prepare a revised agreement under the direction of Permanent Secretary Abel Enitan.
The Ministry of Justice has been involved from the start to guarantee that all agreements are legally enforceable, and this document will be sent to the negotiation team led by Yayale Ahmed.
Officials from the Budget Office, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the TETFund, and the Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission attended the latest conference, which also included members from the Ministries of Justice, Labour, and Education.
The Ministry asked the public and students to maintain composure and solidarity as work towards a lasting agreement with ASUU continues.
