Worked Questions

Question 1 – Percentage Contribution

A man and his wife went to buy an article costing ₦400. The woman had 10% of the cost and the man had 40% of the remainder. How much did they have altogether?

Solution:

  • 10% of ₦400 = ₦40 (woman’s share).
  • Remainder = ₦400 – ₦40 = ₦360.
  • 40% of ₦360 = ₦144 (man’s share).
  • Total = ₦40 + ₦144 = ₦184.

Answer: ₦184 (Option C)

Question 2 – Salary Increase

After receiving a 15% rise, a man’s new monthly salary is ₦345. How much was his monthly salary before the increase?

Solution:

  • New salary = 115% of original salary.
  • So, 115% = ₦345.
  • 100% = (100 ÷ 115) × 345 = ₦300.

Answer: ₦300

Question 3 – Simple Interest

A man invested ₦2,000 at 10% per annum for 3 years. What is the simple interest?

A. ₦200
B. ₦300
C. ₦600
D. ₦500

Answer: C. ₦600
Simple Interest = (P × R × T) ÷ 100 = (2000 × 10 × 3)/100 = ₦600.

Question 4 – Profit and Loss

A trader bought an item for ₦1,500 and sold it for ₦1,800. What is the profit percentage?

A. 10%
B. 15%
C. 20%
D. 25%

Answer: C. 20%
Profit = 1800 – 1500 = ₦300.
Profit% = (Profit ÷ Cost Price) × 100 = (300/1500) × 100 = 20%.

Question 5 – Ratio

Divide ₦2,400 between Tunde and Bola in the ratio 3:5.

A. ₦900 and ₦1,500
B. ₦800 and ₦1,600
C. ₦1,200 and ₦1,200
D. ₦1,000 and ₦1,400

Answer: B. ₦800 and ₦1,600
Total ratio = 3 + 5 = 8 parts.
1 part = ₦2400 ÷ 8 = ₦300.
Tunde = 3 × ₦300 = ₦900.
Bola = 5 × ₦300 = ₦1,500.
(Corrected: A is right, ₦900 and ₦1,500).

Question 6 – Discount
