Emerging: NYSC Pays Corps Members N44,000 Arrears.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, confirmed this and said that the payments are being paid in installments.

This action satisfies the Federal Government's commitment, first expressed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in September 2024, to match the stipends of corps members with the new national minimum wage.

Arrears are paid once the new allowance is first implemented in March 2025. Prior to that, months of waiting and dissatisfaction had resulted from corps members continuing to receive the former N33,000 rate even after the new rate was approved.

Speaking during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilization Workshop in Abuja, Brig. Gen. Nafiu promised corps members, both past and present, that the government will make good on its promise to discharge all outstanding debts.

"The administration is aware of its commitment and will deal with the arrears within the allocated budget. "We have their bank details, so even those who have just passed out will benefit," he said.

Between July 2024, when the new N77,000 allowance linked to the N70,000 minimum salary (plus 10%) was authorised, and March 2025, when real payments started, the arrears are covered.

Despite being promised N77,000, we continued to get N33,000. Isma’il Isah, a corps member from 2024 Batch A Stream 2, described the passing-out procession in Kano as "disappointing." "It's a step towards demonstrating that the government cares about our welfare now that the arrears are coming."
