Armed bandits disguised in hijabs abducted two residents of Melehe community in Kontagora LGA, Niger State during a late-night attack on September 5, 2025.

The Attack

Eyewitnesses said the four attackers arrived between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. and posed as harmless visitors. They sat quietly outside a compound for more than an hour, blending in and raising no suspicion.

Shortly before midnight, the men removed their disguises, pulled out weapons, and stormed the residence. They seized the principal of the Junior Secondary School in Melehe and a local woman, Aminu Runtoje, before escaping into the night.

Community Reaction

Residents explained that the deceptive strategy caught everyone off guard. The disguise lowered defenses and allowed the attackers to move unnoticed.

As a result, fear and outrage have spread through the community. Many locals are now demanding stronger security presence in rural areas vulnerable to bandit attacks.

Authorities Respond

Security officials confirmed the abductions and announced an investigation. However, as of this report, the victims’ whereabouts remain unknown.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. Meanwhile, the incident adds to the growing list of violent crimes in Niger State, where banditry and kidnappings for ransom continue to plague local communities.
