OAU Student Issues Public Apology After Defamation Dispute

A female student of Obafemi Awolowo University, identified as Adeife, has publicly apologised to her schoolmate, David Adefesobi Ojuko, following a ₦15 million defamation lawsuit linked to a rape allegation she later admitted was untrue. In a video circulated online, Adeife explained that she posted the claim on her WhatsApp status during an emotional disagreement. She acknowledged that her statement was wrong and accepted responsibility for the damage it caused. Allegation Withdrawn Adeife clarified that the accusation arose from a dispute connected to David’s opinion on the trending “Mirabel issue,” which escalated. Acting in anger, she made the allegation without evidence. She formally withdrew the claim and stated that: There was no proof to support her earlier statement David had never assaulted her or anyone else People who know him describe him as respectful and easy-going Family Intervention and Resolution Steps Both families held a virtual meeting on 20 February 2026, during which Adeife admitted wrongdoing and accepted the corrective measures agreed upon. As part of the resolution, she was required to: Write a formal apology letter Publish a public retraction video Arrange for her parents to visit David’s family in Ile-Ife for a personal apology Her parents completed the physical visit on 22 February 2026. Reflection and Lesson Adeife said the situation taught her a serious lesson about the consequences of speaking in anger, particularly on social media.
