Universities Shut Down: NASU and SSANU Begin Indefinite Nationwide Strike

Published on May 1, 2026 • Education

As of 12:00 a.m. today, May 1, 2026, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU has officially paralyzed administrative activities across Nigerian federal and state universities. Following the expiration of the April 30 ultimatum and a failed "last-ditch" meeting with government officials, the unions have moved from threats to a total and comprehensive withdrawal of services.

The timing—coinciding with International Workers' Day—adds a layer of symbolic weight to a situation that has left students and university administrators in a state of high anxiety.

⚠️ The Core Grievances: Why the Strike?

The unions have expressed deep frustration over what they describe as "second-class treatment" compared to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Issue Status Union Response
2009 Agreement Renegotiation unfinalized. Claiming the process is intentionally stalled.
30% Salary Proposal Withdrawn by the Government. View this as a betrayal of previous negotiations.
Salary Benchmarks Previous 30% offer rejected. Deemed inconsistent with current inflation and collective bargaining.

🛑 What "Total and Comprehensive" Means for You

Unlike "warning strikes," a total strike by non-academic staff (who handle the literal "gears" of the university) has immediate, physical consequences on campus life:

  • Administration: Transcripts, admission processing, and bursary services are suspended.

  • Essential Services: In many cases, this includes the shutdown of university-managed water and electricity supply.

  • Security & Maintenance: Portals may be deactivated, and lecture halls or laboratories may be locked.

  • Enforcement: Monitoring teams are already active. Branches that attempt to "sneak in" work are facing strict union sanctions.

The "Ultimatum" Fallout

The April 29 meeting was intended to prevent this exact scenario. However, the government’s reported failure to provide a replacement for the withdrawn 30% salary increase left union leaders with little room for maneuver. By refusing to finalize the 2009 agreement, the Federal Government has effectively hit the "pause" button on the 2025/2026 academic calendar for many institutions.

"To criminalize the pursuit of fair wages by stalling negotiations is to invite the chaos we now see." — General sentiment from union leadership.
