Dame Patience Jonathan, the former First Lady of Nigeria, has spoken candidly about the emotional and intellectual difficulties she had while pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. She said that she almost dropped out of the school as a result of constant pressure from her professors.
Mrs. Jonathan, who just received a PhD in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, described times when she experienced personal uncertainty and frustration that almost caused her academic career to fail during a testimony at Streams of Joy Church.

Mrs. Jonathan attributed her perseverance and ultimate success to supernatural help, despite the scholastic challenges and times of self-doubt.

Since I was the First Lady, I didn't believe I could pull it off. However, God said to me, "Why can't you accomplish this if your children can?" That gave me the resolve to keep going," she said.
She often asked questions, even if it meant repeating them many times, and was unaffected by age or social standing. The youngest children picked things up fast. She smiled and remarked, "I had to ask three times before I understood one thing."
