The head of the biology department of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, and a lecturer, Prof. Nasir Hassan-Wagini, has encouraged young Nigerians to start small enterprises rather than wait for official jobs.

The professor described his experience in an interview at the Batsari weekly market, where he sells agricultural food. He said that growing up in an agricultural household had influenced his business spirit, which he continues to pursue in addition to his studies.

Although it's more honourable than doing nothing, many people are too proud or ashamed to do what I do. To become self-sufficient, you may integrate education with real-world skills," he said.

He underlined that young people should concentrate on farming and business in order to generate value and independence rather than looking for work elsewhere.

According to Uzairu, a fellow market seller, the professor was modest, truthful, and kind.

Everyone is treated with decency by him. In addition to being a lecturer, he is well-liked here for the way he interacts with us.

A 100kg bag of onions presently sells for ₦65,000 or more, dried red peppers for ₦115,000+, and dried tomatoes for ₦60,000+, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The price of a 50 kilogramme bag of fresh hot pepper is around 100,000 naira.

Market activity is anticipated to increase in the next months as harvest season draws near and regional security improves.
