UNICEF strongly urged the Nigerian government to prioritize early childhood education as part of its national development goal as the world observed the Day of the African Child. The organization underlined that foundational education is the cornerstone of a thriving and just society in addition to being a basic human right.

During a press conference in Enugu, UNICEF's Chief of Field Office, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, spoke on behalf of Communications Officer Dr. Ijeoma Onuoha Ogwe and emphasized the critical need for ongoing political will and funding for pre-primary and primary education.
Additionally, UNICEF demanded more funding for hiring, educating, and retaining skilled educators, particularly in the early childhood sector. The organization emphasized that as teachers are the most important component of education in schools, they should get sufficient support in the form of better working conditions and chances for professional growth.

Chiluwe concluded by inviting the Nigerian government to set an example for the African Union by including children's rights in national budgets and making sure that every naira spent has a quantifiable effect on the education and welfare of children. She said that children are the continent's future and that every kid must have access to education, care, and opportunities.
