English Language NECO Syllabus
Below is the 2026 NECO English Language Syllabus for both internal and external candidates.
Aims and Objectives
The syllabus is designed to enable candidates to:

communicate effectively in spoken and written English.

develop the ability to comprehend and interpret written texts.

acquire a wide vocabulary for accurate expression.

use correct grammatical structures in speech and writing.
-
develop critical and analytical reading skills.
-
write coherent, organized, and purposeful essays.

appreciate the conventions of English pronunciation and speech.

apply English language skills in academic, social, and professional contexts.
Scheme of Examination
There will be three papers: Paper I, Paper II, and Paper III.
Paper I
Will consist of multiple-choice objective questions testing candidates' knowledge of:

Duration: 1 hour
Marks: 60
Paper II
Will consist of essay writing and comprehension questions.
Candidates will be required to answer questions from different sections.
Duration: 2 hours
Marks: 100
Paper III
Will test Oral English.
Questions will be based on listening and recognition of speech sounds where applicable.
Duration: As specified by NECO
Marks: 40
