History NECO Syllabus
Below is the 2026 NECO History Syllabus for both internal and external candidates.
Aims and Objectives
The syllabus is designed to enable candidates to:

acquire knowledge of the historical development of societies and civilizations.

understand the origins, growth, and interactions of different peoples and cultures.
-
appreciate the contributions of notable individuals and groups to historical development.
-
develop critical thinking and analytical skills through the study of historical events.
-
understand the causes and consequences of major historical developments.
-
foster national consciousness, unity, and responsible citizenship.
-
develop the ability to interpret historical evidence and sources.
-
appreciate the relevance of history to contemporary social, political, and economic issues.
Scheme of Examination
There will be two papers, Paper I and Paper II, both of which must be taken.
Paper I
Will consist of fifty multiple-choice objective questions covering all sections of the syllabus.
Duration: 1 hour
Marks: 50
Paper II
Will consist of essay and structured questions.
Candidates will be required to answer questions from different sections of the syllabus.
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
Marks: 100
