Literature in English NECO Syllabus
Below is the 2026 NECO Literature in English Syllabus for both internal and external candidates.
Aims and Objectives
The syllabus is designed to enable candidates to:

develop an appreciation of Literature in English as an artistic expression of human experiences.
-
understand and analyze literary texts critically and creatively.
-
acquire knowledge of literary terms, techniques, and devices.
-
develop reading, interpretation, and communication skills.
-
appreciate the cultural, social, political, and historical contexts of literary works.
-
enhance imaginative and analytical thinking abilities.
-
develop the ability to express personal responses to literary texts effectively.
-
prepare for further studies in literature, humanities, and related disciplines.
Scheme of Examination
There will be three papers, Paper I, Paper II, and Paper III, all of which must be taken.
Paper I
Will consist of objective multiple-choice questions drawn from all aspects of the syllabus.
Duration: 1 hour
Marks: 50
Paper II
Will consist of questions on African and Non-African Prose as well as African and Non-African Drama.
Candidates will be required to answer a specified number of questions from prescribed texts.
Duration: 2 hours
Marks: 50
Paper III
Will consist of questions on African and Non-African Poetry and Literary Appreciation.
Candidates will be required to answer questions based on prescribed poems and literary concepts.
Duration: 2 hours
